Carlos Santana Rocks Melbourne, Guitar Heaven 2011 Tour

Guitar legend and famous musician, Carlos Santana, came to the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia as part of his "Guitar Heaven 2011" tour on the 16th March.  He did not disappoint.  He was magnificent.
Toting a style that defies definition, immediately recognizable yet unlike any other, Santana's fusion of Latin rock, blues, soul and jazz comes in full swing on stage in a way that transcends time and the limits of genre typecasting.
For forty years and as many albums later, Santana has sold more than 90 million records and reached more than 100 million fans at concerts worldwide. To date, Santana has won ten Grammy Awards, including a record-tying nine for a single project, 1999's Supernatural (including Album of the Year and Record of the Year for Smooth). In 1998, the group was ushered into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Among many other honours, Carlos Santana has also been cited by Rolling Stone as 15 on their list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.
To me, he is the greatest.  Enjoy the highlights from the show.

Michael's Jackson's Smooth Criminal by Dueling Cellists

In the video below, two world famous cellists, Stjepan Hauser and Luka Sulic, reenact Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal" as dueling cellists.
Croatian cellist Stjepan is known as the “Magician of the Cello” and has won many international awards for his undeniable talent and showmanship.
Luka, a young cellist, has also received numerous awards since he began competing in 2006.
In addition to their obvious musical talent, their theatrics are spot on. This is truly brilliant.
They make playing a cello look sleek and sexy. Enjoy.... it's a lot of fun!

Leslie Nielsen Dies at 84

Actor Leslie Nielsen, star of such comedies as "Airplane" and the "Naked Gun" series, died today of complications from pneumonia. Nielsen was 84.
Nielsen came to Hollywood in the mid-1950s after performing in 150 live television dramas in New York. With a craggily handsome face, blond hair and 6-foot-2 height, he seemed ideal for a movie leading man.
He quickly became known as a serious actor, although behind the camera he was a prankster. That was an aspect of his personality never exploited, however, until "Airplane!" was released in 1980 and became a huge hit.
The actor also had major roles in such films as "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Forbidden Planet" and appeared in many later television shows, including the cult hit "Police Squad."
I will miss his comedy and his facial expressions.  RIP Leslie Nielsen.

George Dalaras Live In Melbourne - 2010 World Encore Tour

George Dalaras (Γιώργος Νταλάρας) performed recently at the Melbourne Hisense Arena as part of his 2010 World Encore Tour.
He was accompanied by his long-time musical friends Mihalis Tzouganakis and Melina Aslanidou.
Dalaras sang demotica, laika, rebetika - songs from his early years and memories of the great composers of Greece. Unlike previous concerts, the musicians played solo parts and improvised on their instruments.
Dalaras’ exceptional voice and instrumental skills have placed him at the forefront of innovation in contemporary Greek music. Over the last three decades he has renewed the genre of Greek laika by leading his mainly youthful public along neglected musical paths like the smirneika and the rebetika.
Unfortunately, I was not impressed with Dalaras on the night and his selection of songs.  The first half of his show was slow, unimpressive and several songs were sleepy and dated.
I was very disappointed that some his most loved songs were not even sung, e.g., "Μη μιλάς, κινδυνεύει η Ελλάς", "Η μάνα του Αλέξανδρου".
This is a serious omission.  I have followed him for nearly 30 years and this night I was saddened that he left these and other popular songs out of his repertoire. Great voice, definitely. But, bad marketing and a let down for fans.  Enjoy the photos and the highlights video of the concert below:

Zeta Makripoulia - Greek Goddess

I just saw the 2010 comedy "The Kings of Mykonos".  It has a poor plot and some weak acting, but some of the best Greek island scenery and, of course, the magical, elegant and beautiful Zeta Makripoulia (Ζέτα Μακρυπούλια).
The humour is quite dated Aussie "Wog" comedy which is made worse by references to goat humour and German stereotyping.  Zeta lights up the screen though.

Katy Perry too Hot for Sesame Street but Okay for The Simpsons

It seems Katy Perry's video below was too hot to show in a children's TV show for some parents, so she has instead agreed to appear with The Simpsons!
I don't understand what all the fuss was about.  But, it is an excellent way to raise awareness and publicity - remember Rhonda Farr famously said "... any publicity is good publicity"!

The Mentalist in Melbourne

If a stranger told you who your favourite teacher was, how would you feel? If he also knew what lottery numbers you would choose, what would you think? What do rational, even cynical people do in the face of an irrefutable demonstration of mind-reading? On the other hand, why is it that some people don’t even need the evidence? The world of mind readers, psychics and the paranormal is one which has divided people for as long as it has intrigued.

We went along last night and saw Philip Escoffey in "Six More Impossible Things Before Dinner" at the Arts Centre in Melbourne... you should not miss this!
My children loved it and even my wife, who liked the John Edwards shows, came out thinking "Wow - how did he do that".
He is one of the best mind readers I have seen, great skill, fantastic humour and he reacts well to the little surprises the audience provides him.  Watch out for the nice little surprise at the end!

Angelina Jolie is great in SALT

Angelina Jolie is fabulous in SALT - one of the movies of the 2010 year. She plays a strong and smart female character accused of betraying her country. It is a movie full of twists and turns. Angelina is sexy, intelligent and attracts the viewer's sympathy from the start.

I particularly like the way we are kept guessing during the movie about her true identity.  Although some of the action scenes are a little unrealistic, it is fun to feel as if we are jumping with her off one truck onto another in one scene.

Apparently, Tom Cruise didn't want the lead role and they had to change the character to a female lead to obviously suit Angelina.

Have a look at how masculine she looks in this disguise in the movie. Apparently the disguise looks very much like her brother in real life!
I rated it a 9 out of 10 for action, suspense and thrills. I can watch this movie again because Angelina's presence carries this movie.

Enjoy the trailer - it doesn't give too much away:

Jackie Evancho is Magnificent

This little girl has an amazing voice!  Jackie Evancho has performed on "America's Got Talent" and has become a YouTube star.
At ten years old, she possesses an ability that many older artists lack. Her talent and presence captivate all that hear her.
Jackie performs with such style and grace that we forget that we are watching/listening to a child.
Let's hope she is allowed to pursue her dreams and share her gift without succumbing to the dark side of success and celebrity.

Inception - Breathtaking and Fantastic

After seeing "Inception" at the movies you'll realise how great cinema can be.  This is a great movie because it has many layers and keeps you guessing what may come next.  I started feeling the excitement I felt when I first saw "The Matrix".  The key theme of the movie is that there is technology available which allows skilled thieves to enter other people's minds in their sleep and steal secrets.
In this case, the plot requires that the opposite be done - that an idea be implanted in someone else's mind without them realising it is not theirs.  Leonardo DiCaprio's character, Cobb, is the protagonist.  Cobb has gone too far with the technology and has got himself in a real mess.  This is his one last chance for redemption.  Now let me tell you what will go through your head as you are watching this...
You will be struggling to keep up with which dream layer you are in - up to 4 in all! You'll be imagining the great possibilities with this technology. You'll be feeling sorry for Cobb and his situation.  You'll be amazed and absolutely loving the action sequences, the slow motion, the worlds being turned inside out, the car chases, the pace of the action and your head will be spinning with where you are and how you will get back.

If you want to enjoy the movie just forget about asking how it is possible to enter someone else's dream - the gadget just exists and there is no scientific explanation how it works.  Just trust me - don't worry about this and you will love the rest of the movie.
Dreams are a very traditional and convenient way to create suspense and action without having to explain too much.  At least in "The Matrix" an attempt was made to explain the central premise of this unreal world.

You can take the whole family along.  Just remember it is mostly gadgets, science, action, suspense and special effects so take the most imaginative ones along who can suspend their disbelief for a little while.
I loved the movie and will watch it again just to keep track of all the dream levels and action.  I've seen better acting from DiCaprio but the special effects are outstanding.  I rated this film overall a 9 out of 10. Go see it on the big screen - the small screen will not do it justice.

Enjoy the trailer:

Knight and Day - Cruise Saves the Day

I was just enjoying the latest Tom Cruise film, "Knight and Day", when the scriptwriter almost ruined it for me.  The plot requires a motive for all the chasing and fighting and treachery and so it is all about a "perpetual energy" battery-type device!!!! Having a science background, this item killed it for me because, as we all know, the laws of physics do not allow this.  Anyway, I loved the film... here's why:

The action sequences and Tom Cruise make this movie.  He has spunk and the action, although fantastic, looks very real.  Cameron Diaz is gorgeous but cold as far as I am concerned. Nothing about her character warmed me up.  She doesn't have the gift of some of the other female leads in the industry - she leaves you empty, wanting someone real!
Other than the terrible acting by Diaz, the film has a bit of everything to keep all the family happy: romance, action, twists, suspense, treachery, bikinis and shorts, and humour.  Many of the good bits are in the trailer unfortunately (see below) but there as some nice surprises left.  The bike travelling amongst the bulls in Spain is fun.  The sequences on the plane are good too - although, a little reminiscent of the "Airport" movies!  This movie needed a third strong character to make it more interesting and a more compelling struggle - maybe a really bad villain.
Cruise keeps selected popcorn movies to resurrect his career.  Maybe he should do some serious stuff or play a bad guy for a change.  Anyway, this one is worth going to the cinema to see.  I rated it an 8 out of 10 because it is escapist with just enough romance to keep even my teenage children entertained.

Predators - Forget the Cinema, Wait for the DVD!

I used to love going to the cinema and watching adventure movies like the latest "Predators" - the 3rd chapter in the series of man-versus-alien adventures.  Now, I hate the current cinema experience - very expensive junk food, long queues waiting for a ticket and 20 minutes of advertising before the movie starts.  Also, have you tried accessing the cinema websites from your mobile lately to check movie session times?  What a horrible experience - all flash, no function. Whatever happened to Village or Hoyts innovating and thinking like a customer?  Anyway, read on for my review of this movie...

Predators is fun to watch - just don't expect to do too much thinking!  I love the special effects - very realistic.  I initially didn't like Adrien Brody as the lead (replacing Arnie) but he grew on me - I especially like his mean streak.  Alice Braga is hot as the tough and sensible female killer.  Those latin looks are to die for! Laurence Fishburne provides some nice twists & Topher Grace is great as the innocent-looking psychotic killer.
Predators should be enjoyed with a big bag of popcorn and lots of friends around you. It is the classic theme of humans marooned, struggling against the elements.  I would have loved it to have a nice surprise at the end but it leaves you a bit "hanging in mid-air".
I rated it a 6 out of 10 for fun and escapism.  Don't bother with the cinema - it is not worth the expense.  Wait for it to come out on DVD and watch it with all the family on a Saturday afternoon.

Last weekend we went to see Antonis Remos (Αντώνης Ρέμος) who sang at the State Netball & Hockey Centre in Mebourne, Australia.  Remos is one of Greece's most popular male singers and sings a variety of modern and famous hits.  As you can see from the video below, he was a crowd favourite and had most people dancing out of their seats most of the night. Late last year we went to see the very likeable Mihalis Hatzigiannis (Μιχἀλης Χατζιγιάννης) Live in concert at the Palace theatre in Melbourne, Australia on 9th October.  The venue was crowded and the viewing quality was not the best.  The sound was also a bit muffled.  But, the show was great.  Mihalis put on a great program playing all his hits.  In fact, I believe he sang his biggest hit (Χέρια Ψηλἀ) about four times!  Enjoy the video below which has a medley of all the songs.
